Helping people across Newcastle for over 10 years
We can help assess neck pain that is:
new or recurring,
associated with stiffness or restricted movement,
affecting sleep, work or driving,
accompanied by shoulder-blade or upper-back discomfort,
travelling into the shoulder or arm,
associated with tingling or pins and needles,
linked with headaches,
continuing after a previous injury.
You do not need to know the exact cause before booking. The purpose of your first appointment is to understand the problem, screen for anything concerning and discuss the most appropriate next step.
What can contribute to neck pain?
Symptoms may be influenced by several factors, including:
sensitivity in muscles, joints or other tissues,
changes in workload or activity,
prolonged or repetitive positions,
reduced strength or movement confidence,
age-related changes in the neck,
previous injury,
sleep, stress and general health,
irritation of a nerve travelling into the arm.
Posture may affect symptoms, but neck pain is rarely explained by one “bad posture” or a single structural fault.
Neck pain is common and is usually not caused by a serious condition. It may develop after sleeping awkwardly, spending long periods in one position, a change in activity, irritation of a nerve or an injury such as whiplash.
What happens at your neck pain assessment?
We listen
Your clinician will ask about:
when the pain started,
where you feel it,
what makes it better or worse,
whether it travels into your arm or hand,
any tingling, numbness or weakness,
headaches, dizziness or visual symptoms,
recent injuries or accidents,
previous episodes,
your medical history and medication,
how the problem affects sleep, work and everyday activity.
We assess
Where appropriate and with your consent, the
examination may include:
neck and upper-back movement,
shoulder and arm movement,
relevant muscles and joints,
strength and functional movement,
sensation and reflexes,
coordination or balance screening,
movements related to your work, sport or daily life.
Assessment of possible nerve-root irritation may
include range of movement, strength, sensation and
reflex testing.
We explain our findings
After the assessment, we will discuss:
what the findings may indicate,
whether nerve irritation may be involved,
possible contributing factors,
whether treatment and rehabilitation appear appropriate,
whether GP review, imaging or another referral may be advisable,
what you can do to help manage the symptoms.
A first osteopathic appointment should allow time to listen, examine, explain the findings and discuss appropriate options.
